Types of Colombian music:

1. Native Colombian music/Folk Music
-This music is very old and was created by the first settlers of Colombia
-Native Colombians still live isolated in Colombia, passing songs onto their children
-These songs tell of past history, they contain melodies that are repetitive in nature
-The main instrument in these songs is flute, a favored instrument among native Colombians

2. Currulao Music:
-This music comes from the Pacific coast of Colombia, and has roots in African and European music and dance
-The instruments used in this type of music are percussion instruments made from wood, seeds, and bamboo
-The music also originates from religious music, and as a result, the singing is typically a lead singer with an answering choir

3. Cumbia Music:-This music is similar to the Currulao music in origin-Instruments used in this type of music are percussion and wind instruments-The singing style is the same as the Currulao: call and response type-The beat of this music makes people want to dance and move to the beatBelow is an example of Cumbia music and dance:






4. Vallenato Music:
-Newer style of music began in 20th century
-Originates from Cumbia music
-Uses percussion instruments, wind instruments, and accordion
-Has a melody and harmony part
-Influence from Europe, Africa, and Colombia

5. Music of the plains:
-Mesh of Colombian and Spanish music
-Derived from waltz music
-Three main instruments used are maracas, harp, and "el cuatro", a small guitar with four strings
-Sometimes, the melody is backed up by electric bass

6. Bambuco music-Has influences from African music and native Colombian music, but main component is Spanish music-Composed mainly of string instruments: mandolin, guitar, and tiple
